MCPHERSON, Kan. (KSNW) — Most of us in this part of the state are familiar with the prestigious automotive restoration program at McPherson College. What we may not understand is the program’s reach. Not only in the U.S. but also around the world. The McPherson College Automotive Restoration Summer Institute has been attracting car enthusiasts to central Kansas every summer since 2007. So far this summer, the college has hosted 163 students, filling 204 seats over a three-week camp period.

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – He was deployed to Afghanistan at the age of 19, where he served on a U.S. Army security team. He came home to Kansas and joined the National Guard. Altogether, he served his country for 13 years. Travis Hofer says he always knew when he was young that he wanted to serve in the U.S. Army. So, at the age of 17, he contacted a recruiter, and after earning his GED, Hofer was off to Fort Benning, Georgia, for basic training.

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Jonathan Platt is living a life of service. The U.S. Air Force veteran had a 24-year military career. For the last three decades, he has led his own church. A Master Sergeant and a pastor. Platt was at Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa when he made the decision to be in the Air Force. Two weeks after graduation in 1970, Platt joined the Air Force during a peak in the Vietnam War.

CHERRYVALE, Kan. (KSNW) — There’s a spot in southeast Kansas, just inside Labette County, where a grizzly murder mystery was discovered 150 years ago. Chances are, if you’ve taken a road trip from Wichita east to Pittsburg, you’ve driven right past it. A family of four German immigrants settled on the Kansas plains along the Osage Trail in 1870. By the time their dark secrets were revealed, the killers were long gone. From that point on, they’ve been known as The Bloody Benders.
