ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith sparked controversy by stating Memphis isn't a safe environment for NBA players. Ja Morant and Memphis Tigers coaches responded to Smith's comments. Stephen A. Smith touched a nerve. One that seemed to reverberate throughout every Memphis nook and every Memphis cranny on June 17. One of American sports’ most prominent talking heads, Smith went on ESPN’s “First Take” and set off a firestorm with his commentary on the level of public safety in the city.

This year is no exception. Of course, Penny Hardaway has rebuilt his entire roster from scratch − a task that takes into account the transfer of All-American guard PJ Haggerty. There is also the ongoing wait for star big man Dain Dainja's eligibility ruling and the news that Memphis missed out on hosting any of the next three AAC basketball tournaments. But it all pales in comparison to the approval of the House v. NCAA settlement and the new era of revenue sharing being ushered in as a result.

Most recently, on June 7, the topic gained some added attention when Boise State athletic director Jeremiah Dickey publicly offered his sentiment on the matter. Dickey, whose Broncos will move from the Mountain West to the Pac-12 in 2026, put out a call for questions on social media. At least one came from a Memphis fan, who wanted to know if the Pac-12 is in the Tigers' future.

Memphis basketball players have begun summer workouts in preparation for the 2025-26 season. The Tigers' frontcourt is a concern, partially due to Dain Dainja's uncertain eligibility status. Summer workouts officially began June 9 for Penny Hardaway's rebuilt Memphis basketball roster. Boise State athletic director Jeremiah Dickey on whether or not he sees Memphis in the Pac-12’s future. A lot of words here.

@willgtg901 I will never say never. Memphis has a great AD who I think highly of. He will do what’s best for his team and fanbase. This stuff isn’t easy. I am a big fan of AAC commissioner as well. We will see what happens. I know everything happens for a reason! Our goal is to elevate!
