It is never an accident when Utah Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham mentions a player's name specifically. It is even rarer if it's a player who is unlikely to play this year. Yet, as the Utes are in their third week of spring practice, Whittingham gave unprompted praise about true freshman quarterback Byrd Ficklin during media availability. "Some guys are stepping up, [I am] really impressed with Byrd Ficklin, the quarterback -- a true freshman. He's doing some good things," Whittingham said.

Keanu Dawes spent the weekend pondering if he should leave the Utah Runnin' Utes or stay and play under new head coach Alex Jensen. He finally has a decision. Keanu Dawes has elected to stay in Salt Lake City and will be considered a key player as Utah is once again trying to rekindle its magic from the 1990s with a new head coach. Had Dawes transferred, it would have marked his third school in three years. The Houston native played for the Rice Owls last year and was named an All-AAC freshman.

Early watchlists, playoff projections, and top 25 rankings will surely be ripped to shreds come Week 2 of the season. But, the situation might be different when it comes to Spencer Fano and the Utah Utes. The 2024 season is one to forget as the Utes were projected to win the Big 12 but fell flat with a 5-7 record. That is not to mean there was a lack of talent on that roster by any stretch, but injuries did take a big toll on this team last year. But, one way-too-early list is kind to the Utes.

The Utah quarterback room for this spring and fall will have a drastically new look. One big change is that Cam Rising will not be on the roster for the first time since the spring of 2019. Head coach Kyle Whittingham announced this winter that Rising is not on the roster. "We've certainly had communication and you don't see him on the roster right now," Whittingham said.

Super Bowl 59 will be a tough one for some as the game kicks off, and it has little to do with the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs in New Orleans. On New Year’s Eve, a terrorist attack in the city claimed the lives of 14 and injured over 30 more. One of those 14 victims was former Princeton football player Tiger Bech. His best friend Ryan Quigley was also severely injured with a broken fibula, a head injury, and both his ACL and meniscus were torn.
