CLOQUET — The Salvation Army is perhaps best known for its red kettles set up outside big-box stores and supermarkets during the holiday season; however, it is not the only effort the organization has to help those in need during the season of giving. The Adopt A Family program directly “assists families in the community who are struggling” by helping them provide Christmas gifts and also necessities for children, said Sue Butkiewicz, Salvation Army social services coordinator.

CLOQUET — At the Carlton County Historical Society’s centennial celebration in August, a pale-yellow Smith Corona mechanical typewriter that Executive Director Carol Klitzke used while attending school in the 1970s captured the interest of the younger attendees. “During (the centennial), the kids were bored to death. I took them back in my office and said, ‘Have you ever used a typewriter?’ … and they spent like three hours on (it),” Klitzke said.

CLOQUET — The Minnesota Department of Education recognizes October as College Knowledge Month, and the counselors at Cloquet High School have “taken it and made it our own,” said counselor Nicole Lackas. Events were planned all throughout the month of October — including speaking in senior classes about the college application process and helping students who are not college-bound navigate other post-graduation steps and plans — but the last full week of October was dubbed College Knowledge Week.

CLOQUET — Lake Superior Medical Equipment hosted a grand opening event to welcome the community of Cloquet to their new(ish) location at 907 Stanley Ave. on Tuesday, Oct. 24. They offered food and beverages to visitors as they saw the new space and mingled with staff. The company moved “right down the sidewalk” to a different area of the building they were previously in last May, said Tom Jamison, owner and president of Lake Superior Medical Supply.

CLOQUET — About five years ago, Lee Harris began thinking about a career change. “I started praying about it for a while. It took a while for me to get an answer about what I was supposed to do next, but I was supposed to learn how to smoke meat,” he said. So, he and his wife, Julie, got a commercial smoker. They practiced and experimented smoking meat and after about a year and a half, reached a point where they felt it was good enough to sell.
Cloquet Council OKs 22nd Street reconstruction proposals

CLOQUET — The Cloquet City Council unanimously approved four separate resolutions related to the 2024 reconstruction of 22nd Street from Prospect Avenue to Washington Avenue at its Tuesday, Oct. 17 meeting. The council approved utility improvements and the final layout of the project, as well as agreements with Carlton County and Scanlon. The project will see a full reconstruction of 22nd Street, which is a county-owned road.
