    CLOQUET — The Salvation Army is perhaps best known for its red kettles set up outside big-box stores and supermarkets during the holiday season; however, it is not the only effort the organization has to help those in need during the season of giving. The Adopt A Family program directly “assists families in the community who are struggling” by helping them provide Christmas gifts and also necessities for children, said Sue Butkiewicz, Salvation Army social services coordinator.

    CLOQUET — At the Carlton County Historical Society’s centennial celebration in August, a pale-yellow Smith Corona mechanical typewriter that Executive Director Carol Klitzke used while attending school in the 1970s captured the interest of the younger attendees. “During (the centennial), the kids were bored to death. I took them back in my office and said, ‘Have you ever used a typewriter?’ … and they spent like three hours on (it),” Klitzke said.

    CLOQUET — The 12th edition of “The Thunderbird Review," Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College’s literary journal, features Duluth novelist and retired University of Minnesota Duluth American Indian Studies professor Linda LeGarde Grover as guest editor, and is open for submissions through Dec. 15. “The Thunderbird Review” is an annual journal that publishes short fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry and art by new and established writers and artists who have ties to the Northland area.
