The council voted unanimously to opt in to the state law, which prevents landlords from evicting tenants in qualifying units without legitimate cause. It also allows tenants to challenge excessive rent hikes used to force them out. “Good cause” eviction already applies in New York City, but communities in the rest of the state have to opt in first, and they can set their own parameters to determine how many units it applies to.

With signs, speakers, and the occasional megaphone, a few hundred people took to the sidewalks in Newburgh to protest the Trump Administration’s policies. Starting at Montgomery Street, the crowd snaked through the sidewalks by the Newburgh waterfront in a nearly single-file line. Resident Terry Demeo came out to protest the efforts by Immigration & Customs Enforcement to ramp up deportations nationwide. “They’re leading with hate, they’re leading with divisiveness," she says.

This year’s primaries include a four-way race for mayor in the City of Albany, and a primary challenger for Hudson Mayor Kamal Johnson. Johnson, a Democrat who was first elected to lead the Columbia County city in 2019, faces newcomer Joe Ferris. Ferris has questioned the city’s financial practices and accused Johnson of not communicating well enough with residents. “Those two issues, when they combine, build a deep lack of trust among our neighbors, our constituents," says Ferris.

Amazon and developer Scannell Properties say the gigantic “robotics fulfillment center” in the Village of Slate Hill would cost more than $600 million to build and bring at least 750 full-time jobs to Orange County, plus construction work. They want the IDA to grant them millions in sales tax exemptions and a 20-year, roughly $102 million PILOT deal. Some residents at Tuesday's hearing, like Holly Moynseeko Wright, said the county could still benefit from the adjusted tax rate.

Poughkeepsie Mayor Yvonne Flowers is taking a leave of absence for “necessary surgery.” The city did not say what for, but Flowers’ leave started Monday. She is expected to return later this month. Until then, City Administrator Joseph Donat will serve as acting mayor. @WAMCNews
