Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Todd Hutchens said a “violent attack on a 7-year-old” while riding in a Bulloch County school bus April 18 led to an investigation that resulted in charging seven juveniles with battery and a bus driver with cruelty to children. “It was a violent attack from the 5-year-old all the way up to the 14-year-old,” Hutchens said at a Tuesday press conference inside the Sheriff’s Office.

The large yellow “CLOSING” sign that hung at the entrance to the Big Lots store in the Statesboro Square Shopping Center came down more than a month ago after all stock was cleared out and the store went dark. But, last week, several new, smaller signs went up announcing the store would reopen on June 5.

With his wife Holly and daughter Skylar along with some of his closest colleagues and friends gathered inside the Emma Kelly Theater, the late Kelly Berry became the eighth member of the Averitt Center for the Arts Legend of the Arts Gallery. And for Trish Tootle, who came to know Berry while working with him on the Averitt Center Board, Berry was right there with everybody during Tuesday’s induction ceremony. “When I walk into this building, I see Kelly and I sense his presence,” she said.

Working in partnership with Scouting America, American Legion Dexter Allen Post 90 made a little history last week: The post played host to a signing event that chartered the first-ever all girls’ troop in Bulloch County.
Following the changing of the Boy Scouts of America name to Scouts BSA in 2019, the group officially became Scouting America in February. It currently has approximately 1 million members across the nation, including 176,000 girls.

Three people were wounded during a shooting incident Thursday afternoon at a Statesboro apartment complex. According to Statesboro Police Department Chief Mike Broadhead, an argument between roommates at Southern Downs apartments ended up in the parking lot with shots fired and three people suffering gunshot wounds. Broadhead said all three were taken to East Georgia Regional Medical Center none of the injuries appeared life-threatening.

In accepting the Statesboro-Bulloch Chamber of Commerce's Distinguished Farmer of the Year award Tuesday, Jamie Thompson offered what would have been her late husband's take on the honor. "I would like to point out that Chris would hate this," she said. "… He never liked to be publicly recognized for his accomplishments. When I told Bo that her daddy would be given this award, she said it was only fitting that he won this year because it was the only year we could get him to accept it."

Land clearing began last year for Statesboro STEAM Academy’s campus off Veterans Memorial Parkway and on Friday, faculty, staff and school leadership officially broke ground on what will become STEAM’s permanent home. “We've got great schools here in Bulloch County that offer great educational opportunities,” County Commission Chairman David Bennet said.
