    A little more than five months after posting “Going Out of Business” signs and about three months after turning the lights out seemingly for good, Big Lots in the Statesboro Square Shopping Center reopened Thursday morning. Shoppers Thursday found a similar-looking store to the one that was cleaned out in March, but with a new shine and more open space. Big Lots has been located in Statesboro Square for more than two decades.

    Last December, less than a week before Christmas, “Going Out of Business” signs were posted at the entrance to the Big Lots store in the Statesboro Square Shopping Center. Liquidation sales were held and the store was cleared out of merchandise by the end of February. But in mid-April, a large sign was posted on the front-entrance windows – "The Comeback Starts Soon!" – and Big Lots is now poised to re-open for business to the public on Thursday.

    In a repeat of the start of the 2024 season, Statesboro High will face Southeast Bulloch on Aug. 15 and Portal will take on Bulloch Academy in the Erk Russell Classic on Aug. 16 to kick off the 2025 high school football season. The Georgia High School Association released the 2025 schedule this week with Bulloch County’s four local teams in action against each other the first week.

    The Board of Education submitted a proposed bipartisan school budget request for a 5.1% increase. The BET cut the budget increase to 3.5%, voting purely on partisan lines. The reduction is $4.05 million. The BOE said the $4.05 reduction to its proposed budget can’t be achieved. There was a long standoff. On April 2 , Republican First Selectman Fred Camillo formally asked the BET to reconsider the $4.05 cut.
