Evans County Board of Education, superintendent part ways

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The Evans County Board of Education voted to part ways with Superintendent Doctor Martin Waters, Monday night. According to a statement from the Evans County Charter School System, the board and superintendent mutually agreed that Dr. Waters will end his service effective May 31, 2025.
Armed and dangerous homicide suspect on the run in Rincon

RINCON, Ga. (WTOC) - The City of Rincon is warning of a homicide suspect at large, and residents are reminded to lock their homes and cars. Investigators are searching for 19-year-old Demarion Quinton Butler. He is considered armed and dangerous. Butler is 6 feet tall and weighs 175 pounds. He was last seen on West 7th Street near Stokes Avenue wearing a red hooded sweatshirt. According to the City of Rincon, U.S. Marshals and Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies tried to apprehend Butler.
Crews respond to structure fire on Wilmington Island

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The Chatham County Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Wilmington Island, Thursday evening. Crews found smoking coming from the roof of a building just before 9:00pm on Johnny Mercer Blvd and Wilmington Village Way. The department says crews worked to suppress the fire on the roof. The funding is from the African American Mayors Association and in partnership with the American Beverage Foundation. The City of Savannah says the money will go to local initiatives that promote access to healthy foods, improve nutrition education and address affordability in underserved communities.
Beaufort PD investigating shooting at Garden Oaks Apartments

BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) - Police in Beaufort are investigating a shooting at the Garden Oaks Apartments in Beaufort. The department says there was a heavy police presence around 9:00 Thursday night. SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - St. Joseph’s/Candler awarded the 32nd Annual McAuley Award to nurse and resource coordinator Celia Dequito during a Thursday ceremony. Her peers noted her selflessness and dedication, especially during the recent, rare January snowstorm. One of her co-workers called Dequito “the most selfless person I have ever met.” They also gave an example of Dequito’s commitment during the January 2025 snowstorm.
Search continues for missing Fort Stewart soldiers in Lithuania

HINESVILLE, Ga. (WTOC) - Over the last few hours we’ve received mixed reports on the status of four 3rd Infantry Division soldiers in Lithuania. The soldiers went missing during a training exercise in western Lithuania, the home base for the 3rd ID is in Fort Stewart. These soldiers are all with the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart. We know they were taking part in tactical training in Lithuania.
Inner City Night Shelter expansion plans face push back

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Some members of a Savannah neighborhood are sharing their concerns on plans to expand a homeless shelter. The Inner City Night Shelter on Arnold Street has served Savannah’s homeless community since 1983. Now the shelter wants to purchase a neighboring lot of land to expand its services. Tuesday night the Downtown Neighborhood Association held a meeting for people to share their concerns with the shelter and Savannah Police.
Georgia Historical Society presents John Macpherson Berrien Award

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A noted historian, educator, and community leader received a top honor for his work with the Georgia Historical Society. Doctor Paul Pressly received the Society’s John Macpherson Berrien Award during a ceremony Monday. The Georgia Historical Society says the honor recognizes someone who contributes to the mission to collect, teach, and promote research about Georgia and American history. The Berrien Award also spotlights a lifetime of achievement in the field of history.
