It’s amazing that this myth still survives in the 21st Century. The short version of this falsehood is that concrete floors can magically drain the charge from a typical lead-acid battery. This is a complete fairy tale. Any battery will tend to discharge naturally over time. The reality is that this discharge process is accelerated by dirt and corrosion formed across the top of the battery case. To prove this point, dig out your digital voltmeter that can accurately read in 0.01-volts.

This tip is directed specifically at early Chevelles, but for any early GM A-body, this should be something to inspect. We’ve noticed cracking on the lower control arms of three different 1966-’67 Chevelles that we’ve worked on. If you own a 1964-’67 Chevelle and is still running the stock front lower controls arms, please read this carefully. Early A-bodies use a raised point on the steering arm to contact the lower control arm as a steering stop.

Nine days behind the wheel of an old car seems like a fun road trip, but the Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Coker Tire is a little more intense than a leisurely cruise. This event is taxing on the teams and on the machines, especially as the days wear on. Although cars are never instructed to exceed 50 miles per hour, the drivers and navigators have a tough job each day to match the Rally Master’s pre-determined time.
