Town seeks to fill open spots on boards and commissions

BENNINGTON – The Select Board announced Monday that the town is looking for a few more good citizens to participate in local government. Board Chair Tom Haley read from a list of open positions on town boards and commissions, noting that the board is asking those interested in serving to send a letter of interest by May 10.

BENNINGTON — Tom Haley and Jim Sullivan were chosen Monday to lead the Select Board through the coming year — as chair and vice chair respectively. Saying they wanted to avoid controversy in order to move forward in a united manner, a 4-3 majority of the board voted to take the unprecedented step of casting secret paper ballots for the positions. That stirred up some controversy of its own.

Select Board to elect new chairperson Monday

BENNINGTON – A new Select Board chairperson is scheduled to be elected Monday to replace Jeannie Jenkins, who did not seek re-election in March. The annual board reorganization is first on the agenda for the 6 p.m. meeting at the Bennington Firehouse. Following results of the March 4 town election, members of the seven-member board include current Vice Chair Ed Woods, Tom Haley, Sarah Perrin, Nancy White and Clark Adams, along with newly elected board members Jackie Matts and Jim Sullivan.
Police: Arlington man dies in single-vehicle crash

ARLINGTON – Vermont State Police report that an Arlington man died Thursday afternoon after his car collided with a tree off Maple Hill Road. In a media release, Cpl. Travis Hess said that a northbound 2023 Nissan Altima, operated by Raymond Ostrander, 85, of Arlington, left the gravel roadway for an unknown reason and struck a tree.

BENNINGTON – A planned luxury resort on the former Southern Vermont College campus is wending through the Act 250 permitting process, a portion of which will include a site visit on May 1, followed by a public hearing in Bennington. A multi-faceted Act 250 application for the project was submitted February 21 by AWRE Vermont Resorts of Harrison, N.Y., and SVHC Realty Inc., an entity associated with the property owner, Southwestern Vermont Health Care.

Foster, Brownell appointed to MAU district board

BENNINGTON – Pownal’s representation on the Mount Anthony Union School District Board has now been cemented. Two residents — former state representative and longtime select board member Nelson Brownell and former school principal Sandy Foster, who currently serves on the regional elementary school board, were appointed last week fill vacancies.
