The family of World War II veteran Robert Furrow celebrated his 102nd birthday on Saturday, a few days ahead of his actual birthday Wednesday. His son Scott Furrow said family came to town over the weekend, so they decided to celebrate early. He said about 20 family members went to a restaurant in Maywood and shared a meal and fun. “A Day’s Work” is an exhibition of artwork related to labor from the collection of the Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The show opens Sept. 30 at the Prairie Arts Center Erickson Gallery and will run through the end of October. The exhibit presents depictions of work by 18 artists and encourages viewers to consider labor’s mental, physical, social, political and economic effects.

Playhouse offers new version of Cinderella musical

The beloved story of “Cinderella” takes on a new twist in the Playhouse's most recent adaptation of the original Rodgers and Hammerstein version. The characters will be a little different than the familiar king and queen, said director Darrell Drullinger. The show is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 29, 30 and at 2 p.m. on Oct. 1; 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 6-7 and 2 p.m. on Oct. 8. Tickets for adults are $18 in advance of $20 at the door. Kids are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.

The Wild West Arena resounded with shouts of excitement as the annual Partner Up Rodeo event hosted students with disabilities from around the area on Wednesday. Organizers said this year a record-setting 223 students registered for the event. ESU 16 and MPCC rodeo team members from McCook and North Platte, along with the Nebraska High School Rodeo Association hosted the event.

The North Platte High School theater department will present “Pride and Prejudice” at 7 p.m. on Friday and 7 p.m. on Saturday at the North Platte High School Performing Arts Center with a $5 admission at the door. Theater teacher Brittany McDaniel said she chose the show because of the way it grabbed her in the first five pages. “It’s a story a lot of people know,” McDaniel said.

North Platte and Hershey public school boards receive state excellence awards

The North Platte Public Schools Board of Education and the Hershey Public Schools Board of Education received the Board of Excellence award from the Nebraska Association of School Boards. The awards were presented on Aug. 29 at the NASB area membership meeting in North Platte. The award is earned by boards who have participated in advocacy and board professional development learning activities, said Shari Becker, director of Education Leadership Search Service.
