ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — On Tuesday, May 7, community members got their first chance to meet new Rock Island-Milan School District Superintendent Dr. Sharon Williams. "I think it's important for us to get to know each other," Dr. Williams said. After the district parted ways with former superintendent Dr. Regiland Lawrence in April 2023, it's had three interim superintendents. The board reached a "mutual agreement" with Lawrence on his resignation and paid him $350,000 for the breach of contract.

MILAN, Ill. — On Sunday morning, nearly 100 people gathered at Camp Milan Retreat Center to honor the leader of the Midwest Sauk Tribe, Black Hawk. The warrior was born in what is modern-day Rock Island and fought in many battles, including the War of 1812 where he aided the British. "Black Hawk was a leader of his people," said Augustana College History Professor Jane Simonsen. The professor spoke at Sunday's service about the history of settlers taking Native American land.
Henry County schools implementing 'Stop the Bleed' kits for active shooter situations

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa — Henry County, Iowa, schools will soon add "Stop the Bleed" kits to every classroom in the county for active shooter situations. New London, Mount Pleasant, Winfield Mount Union and Waco school district are all hoping to have the kits by the fall. The Henry County Sheriff's Office is leading the initiative, and hopes to put together 400 kits, costing $30,000 total. The sheriff's office is working with the Mount Pleasant school foundation to write grants for funding.

Peggy Ohl began the Ohl Strong Fund following her husband Brent's passing in 2016 from pancreatic cancer. MOLINE, Ill. — Peggy Ohl lost the love of her life to pancreatic cancer in 2016. Her husband Brent passed away at 48 after a four-and-a-half month battle. Their two boys were nine and 12 years old at the time. Following her husband's death, she founded the Ohl Strong Fund, which donates $500 VISA gift cards and provides a support system to people in the QCA with pancreatic cancer.
