Social Democrats councillor Isobel Towse raised the issue under Any Other Business at last Monday’s meeting. “I wondered if we could not offer the free bottles of water here at the full council meetings as a waste reduction measure. There are water dispensers and cups. People prefer glasses. It is a really small suggestion. Cllr Towse subsequently elaborated on where her idea generated from.

The delayed €20m free HRT scheme which was originally planned to roll out in January and should save women who undergo HRT between €30 and €70 a month will come in to effect from June 1 without the agreement of the pharmacists’ union. Any woman prescribed HRT by their doctor is entitled to it free. Senator Eileen Lynch is calling on pharmacies across Cork to sign up to the HRT scheme, to ensure women receive the medication and healthcare they need and have been promised.

Referring to the Taoiseach Micheál Martin’s recent claim that he is not planning for a border poll in 2030, Sinn Féin councillor for Cork City South West Joe Lynch said that there is an ‘onus’ on the Irish Government to plan and prepare for Irish unity. “Taoiseach Micheál Martin can stick his head in the sand and stand against reunification, but there is an onus on the government to plan and prepare for constitutional change and for the reunification of our country.

A motion was tabled at last Monday’s full council meeting by three councillors Cllr Ann-Marie Ahern, Cllr Mary Lenihan-Foley and Cllr Michael Hegarty requesting that Cork County Council write to Minister O’Callaghan to retain the court services in Mall House in Youghal and that it is not moved to Dungarvan.

The Concerned Dairygold Shareholders Committee was selected following a meeting in January which was organised by Dairygold milk supplier Niall Twomey. The committee members include Ned O’Keefe Mitchelstown, Niall Twomey Minane Bridge, Nigel Sweetnam Kinsale, Tadhg McSweeney Carrignavar and Eoin Bourke, Kilross. A key requirement for the group was getting a commitment from the board and management at a recent meeting to pay the leading milk price for 2025.
