OXFORD – Houston Academy coach Sharon Cherry says she often tells her team, “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.”The Raiders certainly had plenty of fight all day long, but perhaps ran out of gas against a well-rested Moody team in the Class 5A championship game Tuesday. The Blue Devils went through the state softball tournament unbeaten over four games and won for the 19th straight time in capturing the title with a 7-4 victory over Houston Academy.

OXFORD – How was the Zion Chapel softball team planning to celebrate the school’s first ever state championship in any sport? “We’re going to Texas Roadhouse,” winning pitcher Riley Bannin said with a wide grin. A good meal is certainly deserved. The Rebels went through the Class 2A state tournament unbeaten, finishing it off with a 5-2 win over Pisgah on Tuesday afternoon. Coach Ethan Deal, a graduate of Zion Chapel, was beaming with pride following the game.

A valiant comeback effort by the Providence Christian boys soccer team came up just short in a 5-3 loss to Tuscaloosa Academy in the Class 1A-3A semifinals in Huntsville on Wednesday afternoon. Making their first ever Final Four appearance, the Eagles found themselves in a 3-0 hole by halftime before a tremendous second-half surge.
