    Spiralling rents in York pose a challenge to tackling homelessness, a council report states. City of York Council dealt with nearly 800 households who were in imminent danger of homelessness in 2022-3 – yet there were fewer than 600 social housing lettings available locally. Nearly 150 affordable homes were built in the 12 months up to March – but 592 need to be built every year to keep up with local demand.

    3 1/1 York Outer’s Labour MP has defended the appointment of a constituency office manager who has donated more than £55,000 to the party. Luke Charters said Owen Trotter’s skills and experience had helped his office respond to hundreds of requests to help constituents since his appointment. The Labour MP added Mr Trotter’s donations had all been transparently declared and they were not linked to his hiring.

    An empty 18th Century building in Heslington and disused office block could be turned into student accommodation under new plans. The buildings, in Main Street near University of York’s West Campus, would be converted into 34 studio and shared flats under plans from Mason Residences UK Ltd. Their application stated the development would help to meet an acute need for student accommodation in the area and stop the vacant office block blighting the area.
