Chatham County residents have three chances to share their thoughts before the Board of Public Education on its proposed millage rate of 17.481 mills. While the rate is the same number as last year, the rate technically equates to an increase of 0.655 mills year-over-year. The increase is because property values have, on average, gone up based on the county Board of Assessors' latest assessment.

Requiem’s flapping flippers almost sounded like bird wings fluttering as Morgan Flannagan, a Georgia Sea Turtle Center hospital technician, pulled the green sea turtle from a rehabilitation tank. Flannagan dried the turtle off and took it inside to the center’s hospital room. “Sea turtles don’t have health insurance,” said Michelle Kaylor, the Jekyll Island center’s director.

Scientists in Georgia are using DNA from one egg per sea turtle nest to track ancestry and migration patterns. Human activities, such as leaving trash on beaches and disturbing nests, can negatively impact sea turtle populations. Conservation efforts have helped restore sea turtle numbers, but continued awareness and responsible behavior are crucial for their survival. As of June 13, nearly 940 sea turtle nests had been identified along Georgia’s coast.

Public hearings on the school district's millage rate were originally scheduled to start on Wednesday, June 11. However, Budget Director Paige Cooley shared at Wednesday's Informal Board Meeting that the Chatham County Board of Assessors had not yet officially provided the local tax digest information.
