ROSELLE, Ill. — In the backyard of her Roselle home, Maya Melendez practices her favorite sport on her personal field of dreams. “When you’re a kid playing (sports), it’s basketball in the street, so what kid wouldn’t want to have their own field in their yard?” Maya’s dad, Randy Smith, figured. So Smith built “Maya Rose Field” several years ago, as his daughter’s talent on the softball diamond began to take flight.
