    A SCHOOL’s Herculean effort to raise cash for Sheffield Children’s Hospital has broken the £60,000 barrier after a near-decade fundraising campaign. Penistone Grammar School’s leaders and pupils came together last week to present a cheque to the hospital, which has benefited from school-wide charity activities. The funds were raised through a wide range of creative and community-driven initiatives including bake sales, Christmas fairs, fancy dress and non-uniform days, as well as sponsored runs.

    COUNTRYSIDE charities have come together with fire bosses in a bid to reduce the likelihood of more moorland fires occurring as the warmer months set in - after a huge area was charred earlier this month. The RSPB, National Trust and the National Fire Chiefs Council are asking visitors to the countryside to help prevent wildfires. The recent warm and dry weather has increased the risk of fires being sparked, which can cause devastating impacts on people, wildlife and precious greenspaces.

    A TOBACCO dependency service has been extended to cater for Barnsley children as young as TWELVE - after health bosses issued a warning over rising cases of hospital admissions. The decision has been taken to offer the service in order to protect children from the harms of tobacco which can occur through either smoking or exposure to second-hand smoke. About 400,000 11 to 15-year-olds in England have tried smoking at some point and about 100,000 smoke now.

Penistone and Stocksbridge MP, Marie Tidball, welcomed tough new measures to tackle record-breaking fly-tipping rates. The government have given new powers to Barnsley Council to empower them to seize and crush fly-tipping vehicles, use new technologies to identify fly-tipping vehicles, and imprison waste cowboys for up to five years in prison.
