NEW YORK (PIX11) – The underdog in the race for New York City mayor may now be the leader. Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani ranked ahead of the frontrunner, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, in a poll conducted by Councilmember Justin Brannan’s campaign that POLITICO reviewed. The poll ranked Mamdani at 35%, while Cuomo was at 31%. Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, is known for his focus on affordability like free bus service and rent freezes on rent-stabilized apartments.

FLUSHING, Queens (PIX11) – Police officers fired shots at a group of suspects who allegedly tried to steal 10 cars from a Queens autobody shop early Friday morning, according to the NYPD. Police said it happened near 33rd Avenue and Miller Street in Flushing around 5:30 a.m. A pursuit of the suspects was called off immediately after shots were fired, according to authorities. Police said no one was struck and no injuries were reported.

JONES BEACH, N.Y. (PIX11) – An 18-year-old was arrested as 300 teenagers descended onto Jones Beach on Thursday during their “senior skip day,” according to the Nassau County Police Department. Police said Kyle Thomas is accused of showing what appeared to be a gun in his waistband as officers tried to disperse the crowd. Fights broke out between the teenagers, who are students of schools in Nassau County and Queens, according to authorities. Police said at least four people were injured.
