2 1/1 A 'SENIOR' dog was rescued from a North Yorkshire river yesterday (Saturday). Crews from Malton assisted with rescuing a senior dog who had become stuck in slow moving water at Low Marishes at just after 12noon. They used two swift water rescue dry suits and personal floatation devices to wade out and rescue the dog, who was then reunited with its owner and taken back home.

Since 2023 the programme at the arboretum has introduced 12 kits back into the wild or into other breeding programmes. These two are the first of 2025 and are viewing the world from the nest box now but will soon be out and about exploring the enclosure. The arboretum, at Castle Howard, introduced a small breeding group of native Red Squirrels Sciurus vulgaris to visitors in 2023.

Loud bangs 'like a gun going off' heard over North Yorkshire town (Image: North Yorkshire Weather Updates) SEVERAL loud bangs described as 'like a gun going off' have been heard over a North Yorkshire town this afternoon. The bangs were heard around 1.30pm, along with a plume of thick, black smoke. The incident is understood to have involved a tractor to the rear of Park Road in Norton. Three fire engines were called to the scene but have since left. More on this when we get it.

Norton Town Council has installed a plaque to honour Lisa Welford who was murdered by her former partner in April last year. Mayor of Norton, Cllr Di Keal, was joined by Lisa's adoptive mum, Rita Welford and birth mother Joy Oxley, as the plaque was unveiled on a bench in the town's Riverside Picnic Area Rita said: “Lisa was a wonderful daughter - she was kind, caring and generous and nothing was ever too much trouble for her when I needed her help.
