    As cold weather settles in around the Atlanta area, a warm blanket is a necessity. Yet the volunteers who make prayer blankets at Alpharetta Methodist Church understand being surrounded with warmth is a year-round essential. For the past 23 years, members of the church have gathered once a week to cut, sew and assemble blankets for anyone who wants one. “We make prayer blankets,” says Prayer Blanket Ministry Co-Chair Linda Sokowoski.

    Tucked away inside an old Roswell fire station at 1601 Holcomb Bridge Road is a somewhat magical place where craftsmen, artisans and those who enjoy tinkering with tools can make and create. The Roswell FireLabs is a nonprofit makerspace. One of those terms you wouldn’t know about unless, well you know, a makerspace is a collaborative facility with tools and components that allows people to come in, use the tools and make things.

    The Roswell City Council recently approved a $29,463 contract with the city’s on-call geotechnical consultant, United Consulting, for construction materials testing services for the Ga. 92/W. Crossville Road at Woodstock Road/King Road project. Materials testing to be completed under this contract includes subgrade evaluation, soil density testing, concrete testing and asphalt analysis. This project will add a right turn lane on Woodstock Road at the intersection of Ga. 92/W.

    Many in Peachtree Corners are concerned about how numerous new development projects are already affecting traffic flow along the city’s major arteries. To address these challenges the city is evaluating and planning several possible solutions. A traffic circle on Peachtree Corners Circle at the entrance to the Forum (near Trader Joe’s) is likely to help improve traffic flow as new development goes in across from the shopping site.

    During the next tornado aftermath or pandemic outbreak, a group of very dedicated volunteers could be the ones to help save your life. The Georgia East Metro Health District Medical Reserve Corps, known as MRC GEM, is a nonprofit working closely with the Gwinnett, Newton and Rockdale County health departments, emergency managers, and homeland security to prepare for the worst-case scenarios.
