PETOSKEY — The Emmet County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal incident that occurred on Sunday, June 1 at the Walmart in Petoskey. According to the sheriff's office, deputies responded to a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle in the Walmart parking lot at around noon on Sunday. The pedestrian was identified as Donald Paul Mitas, 83, of Saginaw. After he was struck, Mitas was transported to McLaren Northern Michigan hospital for treatment. He died on Monday, June 2.

BOYNE CITY — A 70-year-old man died on Friday, May 30 after falling into the water at the Harborage Marina in Boyne City. According to the Boyne City Police Department, emergency services received a report at 11:07 p.m. that a man had fallen into the water and struck his head. Witnesses could not see the man in the water. An officer arrived on scene one minute later at 11:08 p.m., and both the officer and a marina employee started looking for the man, but were unsuccessful.

PELLSTON — The Pellston Fire Department, Michigan Department of Natural Resources and other local agencies responded to a large brush fire on Thursday, May 29. Mike White, captain of the Pellston Fire Department, said when they arrived on the scene, there was a brush fire the size of a football field. Because of dry and windy conditions, the fire quickly spread into nearby pine trees.
