    Joanna Escobar was in and out of the hospital between 2022 and 2023 because of Crohn's disease. That made it difficult for the 29-year-old Canton resident to keep a job. A hospital caseworker helped her apply for Medicaid, but Escobar said the government insurance wouldn't cover brand-name, biologic drugs that cost $11,000 to $13,000 out of pocket. “I had to settle for other drugs that weren't as effective, and then I ended up failing those drugs," she said.

    Numerous Big Lots stores, including Alliance, Canton Township and New Philadelphia locations, will reopen under new ownership in the coming months. The Columbus-based discount chain filed for bankruptcy protection and closed several stores in 2024, according to The Columbus Dispatch. Hartville, Alliance and Canton Township stores were among the casualties. Variety Wholesalers, a discount retailer, recently announced the reopening of several "newly acquired" Big Lots stores.

The former Wilkof Supply Co. and Ron's Workingman's Store, a vast building at 314 Cherry Ave. SE, is ready for a new purpose. Ron Wilkof, the third-generation owner of the companies, closed the work apparel store in 2019 and the industrial supply company in 2023 to retire.
