The Auburn Enlarged City School District's athletic director will depart this week for another district in the region. Chris Maher will finish as Auburn's director of health, physical education and athletics on Friday. The district board of education accepted his resignation at its May 13 meeting. Maher, who began as Auburn's athletic director in June 2021, is leaving for the same position at the Waterloo Central School District beginning Monday, June 9.

A hunter has received two tickets from the state Department of Environmental Conservation for allegedly shooting more turkeys than legally allowed in Cayuga County. According to a news release from the DEC on Wednesday, officers from its Division of Law Enforcement responded to a complaint about the turkeys in the town of Montezuma on May 15.

An Auburn man received the maximum prison sentence for a felony drug charge on Wednesday. Terrance Hines, 45, was sentenced by Judge Thomas Leone that morning in Cayuga County Court to 12 years in state prison for third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, Cayuga County District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci said in a news release.

The cause of a two-alarm blaze that destroyed a $1.2 million home on Owasco Lake last month has not been determined, but it is not considered suspicious. Owasco Fire Department Chief Jeremy VeVone told The Citizen on Tuesday that the cause has not been determined due to the extensive damage to the home, located at 70 Willowbrook Drive. But the cause of the early morning May 14 fire is not considered suspicious, VeVone added.

A child was transported by helicopter to a hospital after sustaining injuries in a four-wheeler crash Tuesday afternoon in the town of Aurelius. The call about the accident, which took place on Pinckney Road, came in at about 4:50 p.m., Cayuga County 911 dispatchers said. The child was transported by a Mercy Flight Central helicopter, dispatchers said, though they did not know which hospital it went to.
