Richard Hodges avoided the spotlight for years while assisting the Union Springs Central School District with its athletic programs. But on Saturday, the 86-year-old was front and center as the district's Athletic Hall of Fame recognized him with the Jake O'Connor Award. Frank Lioi told The Citizen on Friday he was surprised that the Chicago-born Robert Francis Prevost, who chose the name Pope Leo XIV, was selected to succeed Pope Francis.

An Auburn man admitted in court this week to setting a woman on fire last year. Mathew Mosher, 51, pleaded guilty to first-degree attempted assault (a Class C violent felony) before Judge Thomas Leone in Cayuga County Court on Thursday, Cayuga County District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci said in a news release. Mosher admitted to trying to seriously injure a woman on July 22 by pouring nail polish remover on her and using a lighter to incinerate her.
Cayuga County man charged with weapon possession, forcible touching

A Cayuga County man was arrested when deputies found a firearm and brass knuckles during a search prompted by a complaint of forcible touching. In a news release Thursday, Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck said deputies responded April 24 to the town of Conquest for a report of a domestic incident at a residence there. A woman alleged that Dale McCarthy forcibly touched intimate parts of her body without her consent, Schenck said.

After rejecting a plea offer last month, an Auburn man has pleaded guilty to killing a 67-year-old woman with his vehicle in the city in January. Christopher G. Dewitt, 31, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide Thursday morning before Judge Thomas Leone in Cayuga County Court, Cayuga County District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci told The Citizen.

AUBURN — A Cayuga County Court judge ruled Tuesday that a former Auburn Community Hospital employee must pay $100,000 in restitution after stealing medical items there and selling them on eBay. Zachary P. Tabone, 33, was placed on one year of interim probation by Judge Jon Budelmann that afternoon for second- and third-degree grand larceny.
