The Sunnyside City Council approved the performance evaluation of City Manager Mike Gonzalez during its regular meeting on May 27. The evaluation covered Gonzalez’s first eight months in the position, from his appointment on Aug. 1, 2024, through April 21, 2025. Council members assessed Gonzalez across multiple areas, including personal and professional skills, council relations, policy execution, reporting, community relations, staffing, supervision, fiscal management, and project oversight.

The Sunnyside School District honored 17 retiring staff members during its school board meeting on Thursday, May 29, recognizing decades of dedication and service to students, families and the community. Those present at the meeting were individually celebrated for their contributions and lasting impact across the district. Among those present were Norma Alaniz, Enrike Amador, Lydia Garcia, Monty Johnson, Darla VanCorbach and Kelly Zakahi. Alaniz retired after 21 years in nutrition services.

GRANGER — The City of Granger and its police department have agreed to pay $700,000 to settle a civil lawsuit stemming from allegations of sexual assault by a former police officer. The lawsuit, filed in Yakima County Superior Court on May 17, 2024, named the City of Granger and the Granger Police Department as defendants. It followed a court order issued by a Yakima County judge granting a 10-year sexual assault protection order against former Officer Glen Trejo.

Washington state Reps. Deb Manjarrez and Gloria Mendoza have concluded their first legislative session representing the 14th District. Since the session ended, the lawmakers have toured the district to share their accomplishments, including securing funding for communities in the Lower Yakima Valley. Together, Manjarrez and Mendoza helped secure funding for more than 30 projects across the 14th District, totaling more than $68 million.
