It's off to the races for many Yakima Valley athletes as they compete in the state track and field championships this weekend. Athletes from Sunnyside, Prosser, Granger, Grandview, Mabton, Zillah, Toppenish, and Wapato are all vying to prove they are among the best in Washington. Sunnyside was the lone Valley school competing in the 4A Columbia Basin Big Nine district tournament with athletes in five events qualifying for the state tournament.

Less than a year after fireworks were legalized within city limits, Sunnyside officials are already working to roll back parts of the ordinance amid complaints from residents and safety concerns. During a meeting on May 27, the Sunnyside City Council discussed a limit to the use of consumer fireworks to a single day, July 4, instead of the multi-day period allowed in 2024. Though discussed during the meeting, the city council pushed back the vote until their next city council meeting, June 9.

Volunteers gathered at sunrise Saturday, May 24, to place American flags on the graves of veterans at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in preparation for Memorial Day. More than 1,900 flags were set by community members, including local veterans and volunteers. The effort was organized by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and American Legion Post 73, who also hosted two Memorial Day services. The main ceremony took place on Monday, May 26 at the war veterans memorial within the cemetery.

TOPPENISH — After voters rejected a ballot measure last November to establish a Metropolitan Park District, the City of Toppenish made the difficult decision to close its municipal pool for the 2024 season. However, a new partnership between the Friends of the Toppenish Pool and the Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic may bring the pool back to life this summer.

Golfers from across the Lower Yakima Valley hit the green for the WIAA State Golf Tournament held May 20-21, with athletes from Sunnyside, Zillah, Toppenish, Prosser and Grandview taking part in the two-day event. Zillah senior Mason Muffet led the way for Valley golfers, finishing seventh overall in the boys’ 1A division with a two-day score of 153 — shooting a 75 on the first day and a 78 on the second.
