The Murder Capital had two of their concerts in Germany canceled this weekend after they refused to take down a Palestinian flag from their set-up. The Dublin-based post-punk band was scheduled to play at the Berlin club Gretchen on Saturday, May 10, and Gebäude 9 in Cologne on Sunday, May 11, but both gigs were canceled.

Robert Francis Prevost, the Cardinal from Chicago who became Pope Leo XIV on Thursday, May 8, has visited Ireland a number of times. In June 2005, Prevost, then the Prior General of the Augustinian Order, was in Fethard, Co Tipperary, to attend a special Chapter Mass in Fethard Abbey, which was celebrating 700 years. "This visit was organised long before our prior, Fr Gerry Horan, was chosen to be Provincial of the Irish Province," the local publication Fethard News reported at the time.

Ireland's political leaders extended their congratulations after Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church on Thursday, May 8. Pope Leo XIV was elected on Thursday, a day after the Conclave, which included 133 Cardinal electors, officially began following the death of Pope Francis on April 21. To elect a new Pope, a two-thirds majority is required, meaning that for this Conclave, at least 89 votes are needed out of 133 electors.
