WASHINGTON, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — Washington High School grad Alec Peters thinks about high school coach frequently. Especially when he comes home for his annual summer camp. “Playing for him and talking about the impact he had on my basketball life. It’s not just my career, it’s been my life,” said Peters. He played for Kevin Brown, who lost his battle against the aggressive brain cancer glioblastoma in 2019.

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — Butler University was among the first schools to offer Lexi Baer a college basketball scholarship. And the Bulldogs were there at the end too. Baer, a senior at Notre Dame High School, announced last week she’s committed to Butler. And she says that school has had the inside track to her heart since the beginning of her recruitment. “I really like the culture of their program, it’s a really good program and a really good school.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — Some of the top high school football players in Illinois are at Illinois Wesleyan this week for the annual Shriner’s All-Star game. The players are all recent grads who just finished their high school careers. Saturday’s game gives them one more shot to play a high school game. “That means everything to me.” said Eureka grad Toru Kupferschmid. “One more chance to get out here and show what I’m made of and who I represent. And it’s a blessing.

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — A pair of local athletes made commitments to play college sports at Division I sports programs this week. Metamora running back Jaiduan Cranford announced he will play football at Northern Illinois University. Cranford rushed for 955 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Redbirds last season. Limestone setter and outside hitter Mia Lamberti announced she’ll play volleyball at the University of Illinois.

BARTONVILLE, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — Limestone volleyball standout Mia Lamberti is headed to the Big Ten. And she’s really excited about it. “It really hasn’t sunk in yet, I’m still processing it. I’ve overly excited,” said Lamberti. “I think it’s crazy that I’ll be playing in the Big Ten.”The 6-foot setter and outside hitter made her commitment to the Illini on Sunday. She first met Illinois head coach Chris Tamas while attending a summer volleyball camp as an eighth grader.
