Kayla Alexander is eager for the next step in her coaching career. She was approved Monday evening as the next girls basketball coach at Hewitt-Trussville High School, taking over a program that has become one of the state’s best. Alexander comes to Hewitt-Trussville from UAB, where she has been on the women’s basketball staff for the last nine years.

There is no apprehension for Denton Johnson in following the most successful coach in Chelsea High School girls basketball history. Johnson sees it as a great opportunity. On Thursday evening, he was approved as the next head coach of the Chelsea girls program. He takes over following the departure of Jason Harlow, who is now the head coach at Homewood. “You’ve got a championship caliber program at Chelsea,” Johnson said.

Trussville's Merritt Daniel won the 62nd Alabama Girls State Junior Championship tournament last week. Daniel entered the final round with a four-shot lead, and posted an overall score of two-over par 218 to claim the title. With the win, Daniel now locks in her spot in the 2025 U.S. Girls Junior Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Georgia, July 14-19, 2025.
