I've been thinking about monkeys lately. Strange, right? But stay with me for a moment. There's this fascinating old story about how monkeys were once caught using nothing more than a crate with slats and a banana. The monkey would reach in, grab the banana, and then find themselves trapped – not by any lock or cage, but by their own unwillingness to let go of their prize. Their closed fist, now too large to pull back through the slats, became their prison.

Humour me in trying a social experiment. Go and ask a sample of people in your team or organisation this question: Did anyone ever teach you HOW to learn? The majority of people you ask will say NO, but for the small percentage who might say yes, ask them this follow up question: Did anyone ever teach you about your brain? My guess is that the answer will be no, just like the tens of thousands of people I’ve asked globally over the course of the last eight years, and it all started with me.

When it comes to learning, it seems the old rulebook no longer applies. There are many factors at play which have led to ‘ability to learn’ being redefined as an essential skill: from changing dynamics in the recruitment sector, to the digital revolution, to new role definitions, remote and online training methods, and new regulatory frameworks supported by new legislation – the list goes on. 'Learn something new today’ should not just be something you do as a child – it’s a lifelong commitment.

One in five working adults (20%) need to take time off work due to poor mental health caused by pressure or stress in the past year. Worryingly, it is thought that 36% of workers believe that their organisations have done nothing to help stave off employee burnout. At the end of July, Wimbledon turned pink! Normally the colours were a tennis’y’ mix of white purple and green but this year move over Vondroušová and Alcaraz, Barbie and Ken had come to Centre Court (at least to the Centre Court shopping centre!). It wasn’t just the toy shops whose windows had become rose tinted–charity shops and supermarkets, TikTok, Facebook and Instagram feeds, were all trending pink in my hometown.
