The City Council confirmed Cook County Commissioner Anthony Quezada as the new alderperson of the 35th Ward on Monday. Mayor Brandon Johnson chose Quezada to fill the vacancy after tapping former Ald. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa to lead the Chicago Parks District in February. Quezada took his seat in the council chambers Monday afternoon to rousing applause from family, friends, fellow Cook County commissioners, and members of the 35th Ward Independent Political Organization.

Police district councilors’ efforts to explore alternatives to having police and 911 handle parking violation complaints hit a snag this week when a City Council hearing on the matter was abruptly canceled. You could see them all the way from Humboldt Boulevard. An army clad in white T-shirts and blue aprons lined up for inspection in front of a crowd of hundreds stretching across the big hill in Humboldt Park.
