CLEVELAND — The game tugs at me in every way, even in sound. Its voice is not comparable to any other. I have known the resonance of this sound since childhood — never changing, unmistakable. "We were ride-or-die before there was ride-or-die," White recalled.

CLEVELAND — I was about 13 years old when I first went to baseball spring training. When the professional Cleveland baseball team headed to Arizona to sharpen their skills for the upcoming Major League season, I also went to training camp, looking to refine my approach to the game. But there was one big difference. In my training camp, I bundled up against the frosty weather of Northeast Ohio, where frigid winds whistled in off Lake Erie like fastballs pitched high and tight.
