Police have charged a man during an investigation into the ignition of gas cylinders which started fires in two legal offices in Gosford. There were no serious injuries but police have called the attack "violent" and "brazen". The 66-year-old man is due to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Saturday. Police are providing an update on the continuing search for a man suspected of throwing an incendiary device into a legal office and lighting a fire in Gosford CBD yesterday. A large bulk carrier entering the world's largest coal port has not scared protesters from the water in Newcastle. About a dozen kayaks and small boats remained on the harbour on Thursday evening as two tug boats escorted the ship to the Port of Newcastle. The protesters, part of climate activism group Rising Tide, paddled into the harbour in an attempt to block the port entry.

Emergency services are resuming their search for an 11-year-old boy who was swept out to sea on the NSW Central Coast. The alarm was raised about 5:15pm on Sunday after reports a person had been spotted in rough conditions off The Entrance beach. Police said a 43-year-old father had been trying to cross the channel from the north side with his four boys aged 11, nine, seven and three. The current swept the eldest boy out into the ocean.

Scientists are excited by the discovery of a potential predator for a prickly pest that is eviscerating marine ecosystems. Research from the University of Newcastle published in Frontiers in Marine Science suggests sharks might have a particular taste for urchins. Climate activists have stopped a coal train near Newcastle in a protest over the federal government's approval for three NSW coal mines to extend their operation for another three-to-four decades. Police were called to Sandgate about 10am on Wednesday, where a group of protesters had climbed the coal wagon. By about 11:30am, police began removing them and four people were seen being taken from the scene by officers.

A Singleton man has pleaded guilty to fatally throwing a live chicken to alligators at a wildlife park in the New South Wales Hunter region. Peter William Smith, 57, removed a silky bantam chicken called Betty White from an enclosure at the Oakvale Wildlife Park in Salt Ash on January 2. He then tossed it into a nearby alligator enclosure where the chicken was killed. Smith was charged with committing an act of aggravated animal cruelty which carries a maximum jail term of two years.

After 10 years of policing, Danielle Maddock did not think she would have much difficulty in picking out a scammer. She was shocked when she found herself caught up in the latest wave of a bank impersonation scam. While juggling her newborn baby in the midst of home renovations, she picked up a call from an unknown number. At the end of the line was a professional-sounding Australian accent claiming to be from her bank, calling to alert her to suspicious activity on her debit card.
