Paul Geater was one of the first journalists I ever met. He was in the East Anglian Daily Times and Ipswich Star newsroom at Lower Brook Street in the early 1990s and I was a new reporter. The first thing I remember him saying to me was, ‘You? Went to Oxford?’ He said it in a loud booming voice that everyone will have heard. Geats, as we call him, is unable to say anything any other way. If anyone else had said this, I would have been offended but somehow Geats got away with it.

It was inspiring to hear from him and his wife about his recovery, how it had affected him, how close he came to not making it, and, perhaps most pertinently, how difficult it was for his wife to have to watch him go through it. The podcast reminded me of a visit I made recently to meet Helen Fairweather, chief executive of Headway, Suffolk. Helen is passionate about the brain. As she said to me: "We all have one!" which means the charity's work is relevant to all of us.

Called Departures, this exhibition is for anyone who has delightedly come upon an Ipswich in Massachusetts or a Newmarket in New Zealand. It follows the 2023 Arrivals exhibition, which celebrated people moving to Suffolk. It's a fascinating thing to visit and has some remarkable artefacts, including the original passenger list from the Titanic, which has been lent to The Hold by the National Archives.
