New retro Michigan license plates available starting in February

Blue "Great Lakes" plateTwo classic Michigan license plate designs are making a comeback! Blue “Great Lakes” and black “Great Lake State” plates will be available Feb. 1. Starting in 2023, the State has issued replica designs of plates originally launched in the 1970s and 1980s. Drivers pay a one-time $55 fee, which includes a $5 plate service fee and $50 that will be deposited into the Michigan Transportation Fund (MTF), to purchase the plate. There will be a $10 renewal fee.

Adam Spencer KnutesonGAYLORD — On Dec. 1, 2024, a trooper from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Gaylord Post responded to an alleged assault at the Dollar General on M-32. The suspect had already left the scene, but the trooper spoke with the victim who said Adam Spencer Knuteson from Johannesburg had threatened him with a knife in the parking lot. They said the incident began inside the store when Knuteson was arguing with a store employee.
Snowmobilers compete in time trials ahead of Saturday’s I-500 race

SAULT STE. MARIE — Snowmobilers completed the first day of time trial at the 56th running of the I-500 endurance race. At 500 laps around a one mile track of ice, with sled speeds well over 100 mph at times, the I-500 is considered to be the most grueling and prestigious snowmobile race in the world. One of four qualifying rounds took place Wednesday afternoon, with 42 racers competing. That number is expected to drop to around 38.

Deputies executed a search warrant at the home in Harrison and said several people were inside at the time. Deputies found meth pipes, a small amount of crystal meth packed for sale and a small amount of fentanyl.
Wasp spray attack leads to meth bust in Clare Co. home

James BriskeyA man was arrested for meth in Clare County after deputies said he assaulting people with wasp spray. On Jan. 23, Clare County Central Dispatch received a call of a domestic assault in Lincoln Township. Deputies arrived to find James Briskey of Lake George spraying people in the home with wasp spray. During their investigation, they saw a meth pipe in plain view. There were told it belonged to Briskey.
Deputies investigate Chippewa Co. crash with 1 dead, occupants of 2nd car missing

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office said a crash on Saturday evening claimed the life of a downstate man. Deputies responded to the two-car crash on Mackinac Trail on the I-75 overpass around 5 p.m. They said the first car slid sideways into the second car on the snow-covered road. Sheriff Mike Bitnar said the first car had three people in it, all of whom were injured and taken to My-Michigan Medical Center in Sault Ste. Marie. The front passenger, a Brown City man, did not survive.
Manistee Lighthouse renovations planned under new SPLKA management

MANISTEE — Built in 1927, the Manistee North Pierhead Lighthouse still provides mariners guidance on Lake Michigan. However, it’s in need of some repairs. The City of Manistee owns the structure, but just last week the Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association signed an agreement to manage it. Search continues for Cody Hockridge, the driver involved in a 2024 deadly crash

On July 25, 2024, a vehicle the Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office says was driven by Cody Everett Hockridge failed to stop on Twin Lake Road at US-131, crashing into a semi-truck. The passenger in Hockridge’s vehicle, Timothy Earl Alberts, died at the scene. Hockridge was taken to the hospital for his injuries and later released. A felony warrant was issued for Hockridge, but deputies say he has been on the run from law enforcement since that time.

The company currently occupies three of six storefronts. With this purchase, Jamesport says they plan to take over a fourth storefront to add more retail space, a “Brewtique” and about 600 square feet of space to their kitchen.
