The New York State Education Department said it won’t adhere to Trump administration demands that the state cut diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives from schools in exchange for billions in federal funding. The federal Department of Education sent states' school systems notices Thursday telling them to certify compliance with federal civil rights law, Title VI, as well as a 2023 Supreme Court ruling that barred colleges from considering race in most admissions decisions.

A man died in the NYPD's custody at the Central Courts Building in Brooklyn on Friday morning, according to police. The 32-year-old man, who'd been charged with petty larceny, was discovered unconscious in the building around 8:25 a.m., police said. EMS responded and the man was pronounced dead, according to police. The NYPD said it was not yet releasing the man's identity, pending notification of his family.

The NYPD blocked off two blocks in front of a Park Slope, Brooklyn home Saturday afternoon, responding to a report of gunshots in the area. According to police, they got a report at about 1:30 p.m. of shots fired in front of 164 St. John’s Place, between 6th and 7th Avenues, and responding officers found two shell casings. Police said no injuries were reported. Police said they were told a man had gone into the house and were trying to establish a dialogue with anyone inside at the time.
