The Madison City Council elected new leadership after taking office Tuesday, the last time the entire council will be sworn in at once. The council elected Ald. Regina Vidaver, who has represented her district on the Near West Side since 2021, to a one-year term as president in an uncontested ballot. Ald. MGR Govindarajan, who has represented the UW campus area since 2023, was elected council vice president, also uncontested.

A man incarcerated in a Wisconsin prison waited months to be treated for an aggressive prostate cancer, despite Department of Corrections pledges that the agency follows professional standards in the health care state inmates receive. Medical records provided by inmate Terry Jackson to the Wisconsin State Journal show repeated delays in the department's response to the 58-year-old's cancer that would not be faced under normal circumstances for a person facing the same diagnosis outside of prison.

Dina Nina Martinez-Rutherford, the first transgender person elected to office in the Madison area, said she's staying in public service out of a desire to have transgender people represented in local government.
