JBS workers ratify new contract with better pay, benefits

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Workers at Grand Island’s JBS Swift meatpacking plant will get better pay, paid sick leave and a pension plan under a new contract between the packer and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW.)In a press release on the UFCW’s website, the union says workers ratified the new contract in May. The agreement covers workers at 14 plants around the country, including Grand Island, which employs about 3,600 workers.
Hastings doorbell cam captures fireball meteor

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - A Hastings doorbell camera captured video of a fireball meteor which was also seen in five other states in the middle of the country. The meteor fell from the eastern sky Wednesday at 3:46 a.m. and was captured by a doorbell camera from Kim Shelton who lives just west of Hastings. Hastings College Observatory Program Director Bradley Peterson said the meteor passed into the earth’s atmosphere and started burning up, which made it visible Wednesday morning.
Driver who caused 4-car crash near Doniphan has to pay back the other drivers

DONIPHAN, Neb. (KSNB) - A black pickup with its lights off parked in the middle of a highway caused a four-vehicle crash in April of 2024, and now the driver has to pay restitution to the owners of the other three cars. Connor Hoffman, 33, stands convicted of four misdemeanor charges including first offense DUI, refusing a breath test, failure to stop at an accident and criminal mischief.

Supreme Court upholds GI sex crime conviction

LINCOLN, Neb. (KSNB) - The Nebraska Supreme Court Friday ruled that a Grand Island man will stay in prison for two sexual assault crimes against a minor female. Court records show Nimrod Torres Aquino, 43, was convicted in 2023 of first degree sexual assault on a child and third degree sexual assault on a child. He was accused of assaulting a 15-year-old girl between December 2021 and February 2022. He was sentenced to 45-60 years in prison.

KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - After his client’s surprise request to withdraw from a plea deal, the attorney representing a suspect in a fatal Kearney shooting is asking the court to remove him as defense counsel. Timothy Noerrlinger of the Nebraska Commission on Public Advocacy filed his request last week in Buffalo County District Court. Noerrlinger’s request came two weeks after his client Romeo Chambers asked to withdraw from a plea bargain made with the Buffalo County Attorney.
Fire at Broken Bow power plant

Several homes and businesses in Broken Bow were without power during a brutally cold morning Thursday because of what was called a “catastrophic failure” at the city’s power plant. According to KSNB-TV City administrator David Schmidt told the Custer County Chief newspaper that the municipal building, the courthouse and some residences do not have electricity. Schmidt also told the Chief the cause is undetermined.

CLAY CENTER, Neb. (KSNB) - The Trump administration’s effort to reduce the federal workforce appears to have impacted the USDA’s Meat Animal Research Center near Clay Center. The MARC website last week listed all the federal employees who worked there. But when checked Monday, that section had been removed and a note on the website indicated that it had been modified on Sunday, Feb. 16.

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A Grand Island man is in jail after a task force found illegal drugs at his business. Grand Island police said 52-year-old Edward Trotter was arrested for drug possession with intent to distribute, possession of money during a drug transaction and possession of a controlled substance. Police said the drug task force had a warrant for Pollys Total Eclipse in the 300 block of North Broadwell.

KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - Two drug task forces carried out raids in two central Nebraska towns Thursday morning in a regional narcotics investigation. The Nebraska State Patrol said a SWAT team and the TRIDENT drug task force raided a house near 8th Avenue and Highway 30 in Kearney. They recovered 12 firearms, approximately 11 pounds of marijuana, 1 gram of cocaine, 4 pounds of THC wax concentrate, and 4 dozen psilocybin mushroom candy bars.
