A Black single father, Kevin Sims had been out of a stable full-time job for about a year when he got hired as a technician at Web Industries, a Massachusetts-based employee-owned global manufacturing company. Web uses flexible materials, such as foams, films and composites, to make products for the aerospace and medical industries. During his orientation, a human resources representative told Sims that Web was 100% owned by its employees through an employee stock ownership plan, or ESOP.

Mark Zuckerberg’s social media company Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, earlier this year rolled back rules protecting LGBTQ+ users from hate speech. That was supposed to align Meta “with mainstream discourse,” following similar changes made at Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter). It may also have been intended to aid in Zuckerberg’s efforts to align with the Trump administration, and particularly its multi-pronged efforts to redefine gender.
