For parents, roller skating is an opportunity to enjoy an inexpensive family outing and share their love of the activity with their children. “It’s like riding a bike. Once you learn, you can do it forever,” said Nicole Kaminsky of Oswego, who brought her daughter and son to the rink.

BATAVIA – The Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry and Clothes Closet, along with the Access Christmas Toy Drive, are two of the community’s oldest and most successful social service programs. Yet the food pantry’s facilities have always been cramped and the toy drive has operated over the years from makeshift locations in vacant retail spaces. Now the city of Batavia is planning to change all that, with construction of a new facility on the near east side.

Gene Olmstead is closing his family business, Olmstead’s TV in Batavia, after more than 75 years in business. Sandy Bressner/Shaw MediaOlmstead’s TV, the oldest continuously operated business in Batavia, is closing its doors after 77 years. Owner Gene Olmstead is retiring and has been clearing out his shop at 221 W. Wilson St. in the heart of the downtown, expecting to be done before year end. “What I’ll miss is people coming in and people who truly appreciate you helping them,” Olmstead said.
