State employees will be getting layoff notices this week, as there is still no budget agreement in the Minnesota legislature - and a possible government shutdown looms. DFL Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy (St. Paul) spoke to WCCO-TV on the status of the negotiations. "Productive but slow and methodical, which I think will yield a good outcome for the people of Minnesota," Murphy said. Murphy said they would like to resolve issues and be ready for a special session this week.

Layoff notices could go out as soon as this Sunday to state workers. That's because legislators have yet to pass a new budget, and without one, parts of the government will be forced to shut down by July 1. The tax bill along with other items such as health and education continue to be sticking points in negotiations. Union contracts call for employees to be notified of any layoffs within 30 days.

It's crunch time at the Minnesota State Capitol and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is optimistic that work on the state budget will be done by the end of today. State and local leaders gathered in Jordan on Wednesday to break ground on a long-awaited road project that will bring a new interchange at Highway 169 and Highway 282/County Road 9. "For far too long, Highway 169 has divided the City of Jordan, separating businesses from homes, and we're about to make this not happen anymore," Minnesota U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D) said at the ceremony. Minnesota lawmakers are still at work trying to finalize details of the nearly $67 billion budget with tension growing. But this one comes with a twist. That tension is not between the parties - but within the parties. DFL State Senator Ann Rest (New Hope) got into it with some DFL State Representatives during a tax conference committee. "The Senate is accepting your offer, one would think that the House would vote for their own offer," Rest announced in the meeting.
