Nearly three decades ago, crowds lined the streets of Bury St Edmunds to catch a glimpse – and perhaps even a handshake – with a royal visitor. In September 1997, Princess Alexandra received a warm welcome as she greeted the town’s residents during an impromptu walkabout in Abbeygate Street. Among the lucky few who had the chance for a quick one-on-one chat with the Princess was Mary Staton, who had worked with her at Great Ormond Street Hospital, in London.

The owner of a beauty salon is looking forward to continuing to ‘make a difference’ after expanding her business to Suffolk. Anna Maurer welcomed customers to BrowLab by Anna at the JMS Business Park, in Bury St Edmunds, on Saturday, May 24. The Northern Way premises is Anna’s second site. The 40-year-old, originally from Lubanowo, in western Poland, has also been running a salon in Ely since 2016, which she co-owns with Lindsey Bond. She said this new site has been a dream in the making since 2019.

A dad-of-three has pushed himself to run every day for a year to honour his colleague and friend who took their own life. Ryan Pearman, of Bury St Edmunds, is nearly 70 days and 500km into his challenge trying to raise as much money as possible for Mental Health UK - a charity close to his heart. The 32-year-old hopes this can help raise awareness around mental health, especially for those who are struggling.

Firefighters have been battling a blaze affecting undergrowth and gorse on a coastal path for more than four hours. Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a fire on the King Charles path, in Levington Creek, at 8.14am today. On arrival, it appeared that a BBQ has been discarded, igniting undergrowth and gorse.

A historic town building may have been lost to a fire if its alarm had not been working, according to a spokesperson for the service. Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service was called to an automatic fire alarm at the storeroom of Ipswich Museum, in Charles Street, last night. Upon arrival, crews found that a fire had broken out in the electrical intake of the property and had spread to the void between the ground and first floor levels.
