A Stamford College student says it feels ‘good’ to have reach the qualifying round of a national plumbing competition. Taylor Ackroyd, who is currently doing his Level 3 plumbing apprenticeship with the Peterborough-based Complete Plumbing and Heating company, has reached the qualifying round of the WorldSkills UK Plumbing Competition. The national event – set to take place tomorrow – showcases the best young talent in vocational skills from colleges across the UK.

Registration for a fund-raising event aimed at helping to preserve the county’s historic church buildings is now open. The Rutland Ride and Stride – held every two years – is set to return to the county on September 13 as part of a nationwide challenge. Participants are encouraged to visit as many churches as possible using their chosen mode of transport – including walking, cycling or even horse riding. However, all forms of transport are welcome, from unicycles to three-legged pairs.

A town picnic has been hailed a ‘roaring success’ as hundreds flocked to enjoy a day full of entertainment. Picnic in the Park returned to Wellhead Park, in Bourne, on Saturday (June 14) offering five hours of attractions, including a classic car display, live music and fairground rides. Visitors also has a chance to enjoy food stalls, a car boot sale outside the Corn Exchange, a car show in The Red Hall Gardens and an exhibition at the Baldock’s Mill.

A festival packed with food and live music returned to a town square for another year. Hundreds descended on Uppingham’s Market Place and High Street on Sunday for nine hours of family entertainment at the annual Feast Day festival. The event kicked off with the mayor’s speech at midday, followed by an array of performances from local bands and musicians. There was also a dance performance by Rutland’s Youth Dance Academy (RYDA), along with street vendors and a crafts fair for the little ones.

There were loud cheers for a mum and son team yesterday as family and friends gathered to watch the pair win a race across the world’s largest continent in a TV competition. More than 50 people descended on Thurston Rugby Club to see Caroline and Tom Bridge, from Hargrave, triumph in the final episode of BBC One’s Race Across the World. Over 51 days, the pair – along with four other teams – were tested both physically and mentally for a chance to win £20,000.
