A local basketball coach with state-championship pedigree is retiring, opening up one of the premiere coaching jobs in Southeast Texas. Silsbee announced Wednesday that boys basketball coach Joe Sigler would retire, effective May 23. He'll step away after three decades leading the Tigers. The Lamar University baseball team is racking up wins at a rapid pace, but in the crowded Southland Conference standings, the Cardinals are still trying to close the gap on first place. Lamar stayed among the conference’s best teams with a three-game sweep of Nicholls State University this past weekend. The three victories in Beaumont brought the Cardinals' win total to 30 this season — one of only eight teams in Division I baseball to reach that mark.
