MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A bill to create a state-controlled oversight board for Memphis-Shelby County Schools passed 26-6 in the state Senate on Tuesday. The Senate took up Brent Taylor’s bill. It must still be approved by the House, which is set to consider it Tuesday. The bill, also known as the Tennessee Public School Accountability Act, would authorize the Department of Education to appoint a board of managers for four years.

It means for now, local courts will not have to consider a suspect’s ability to pay while setting bond. MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A grand jury is set to hear the case of the man accused of shooting a beloved Collierville doctor to death in 2023. A judge found enough probable cause to send the murder case against Larry Pickens to the grand jury Thursday. Pickens will remain in jail on $1.2 million bond. Pickens is charged with the July 2023 shooting death of Dr. Benjamin Mauck, an orthopedic surgeon at the Campbell Clinic on Poplar.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Calls to oust the Shelby County Clerk Wanda Halbert ring louder with a major development in the case. Last month, an attorney filed a petition to remove Halbert, citing “willful neglect to perform her duties”. The county attorney’s office says Halbert did not answer their complaint within the proper time frame. Halbert was required by law to answer their complaint within 20 days, but they say she never did.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County Sheriff is telling county commissioners not to approve the latest budget proposal from Mayor Lee Harris, which would eliminate hundreds of currently vacant positions in the Sheriff’s Office. The budget proposal submitted by Harris would cut more than 400 vacant positions, including hundreds of deputy jailers. Sheriff Floyd Bonner, speaking during a budget hearing Wednesday, says that plan would be illegal under state law.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Shelby County is set to lose two criminal court judges’ seats under a bill that passed the Tennessee legislature Wednesday, as the local court system strains under a backlog of cases. SB2517 eliminates the seats held by former judge Melissa Boyd, who resigned after pleading guilty to criminal charges earlier this month, and Judge Mary Wagner, who recently was appointed to the Tennessee Supreme Court.
