MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A federal judge handed down a new ruling in the battle over bail reform in Memphis, denying a motion for a federal injunction to stop a new state law. It means for now, local courts will not have to consider a suspect’s ability to pay while setting bond. That rule is tied to a new state law sponsored by Memphis lawmakers Brent Taylor and John Gillespie.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A grand jury is set to hear the case of the man accused of shooting a beloved Collierville doctor to death in 2023. A judge found enough probable cause to send the murder case against Larry Pickens to the grand jury Thursday. Pickens will remain in jail on $1.2 million bond. Pickens is charged with the July 2023 shooting death of Dr. Benjamin Mauck, an orthopedic surgeon at the Campbell Clinic on Poplar.

Detawn Gunn, the suspect charged with five counts of attempted murder in that shooting, was back before a judge Friday as attorneys argued whether he should be back in jail following his release.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Calls to oust the Shelby County Clerk Wanda Halbert ring louder with a major development in the case. Last month, an attorney filed a petition to remove Halbert, citing “willful neglect to perform her duties”. The county attorney’s office says Halbert did not answer their complaint within the proper time frame. Halbert was required by law to answer their complaint within 20 days, but they say she never did.
