    MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A bill to create a state-controlled oversight board for Memphis-Shelby County Schools passed 26-6 in the state Senate on Tuesday. The Senate took up Brent Taylor’s bill. It must still be approved by the House, which is set to consider it Tuesday. The bill, also known as the Tennessee Public School Accountability Act, would authorize the Department of Education to appoint a board of managers for four years.

    MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A grand jury is set to hear the case of the man accused of shooting a beloved Collierville doctor to death in 2023. A judge found enough probable cause to send the murder case against Larry Pickens to the grand jury Thursday. Pickens will remain in jail on $1.2 million bond. Pickens is charged with the July 2023 shooting death of Dr. Benjamin Mauck, an orthopedic surgeon at the Campbell Clinic on Poplar.
