WAVERLY, Neb. (KLKN) – Nebraska farmers might be forced to find different crops if the drought keeps building. Heat can be a great thing for crops. But over the past few years, it’s been all sun and little rain. Tom Peterson, a farmer near Waverly, said if the weather continues to trend in that direction, farmers will have to change their ways. “It’s kind of been a three, four-year period where we’ve been working through this, just looking for timely rains to get us through,” Peterson said.

VALPARAISO, Neb. (KLKN) — A rural Nebraska fire department is training the next generation of first responders amid a nationwide firefighter shortage. Valparaiso Fire & Rescue is teaching lifesaving techniques to people as young as 14 through a cadet program. The program allows anyone who wants to become a firefighter — or anyone who is simply curious about the profession — to get hands-on experience in training sessions. The session on Monday was focused on rescuing someone trapped in a vehicle.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska is filling vending machines at their health centers — but not with food. Instead, the machines are stocked with supplies that could save lives. “These vending machines are just one way of us meeting you where you’re at when you need help,” said LuAnne Even, the chief behavioral health officer at Ponca Health Services. There’s a stigma around addiction — a stigma that could discourage some people from reaching out for the help they need.
