ASP: Helena-West Helena mayor arrested for not paying taxes

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Helena-West Helena Mayor Christopher Franklin was arrested Tuesday for failing to pay his taxes, Arkansas State Police say. A video began circulating on Facebook this afternoon that appeared to show Mayor Franklin being placed in handcuffs by Arkansas troopers. ASP said Franklin, 44, was charged with four counts of Failure to Pay or File a Tax Return, a Class D felony as a result of a Special Investigations Unit (SIU) probe.
Former MSCS superintendent Feagins seeks injunction to void school board's firing

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The former superintendent of Memphis-Shelby County Schools is seeking a preliminary injunction to void the school board’s decision to fire her, and get her job back. Attorneys for Dr. Marie Feagins filed the motion Monday in Shelby County Circuit Court. Dr. Feagins was terminated on January 21. In February, Feagins filed a civil lawsuit against the school board for terminating her contract.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police took two people into custody at an East Memphis Walgreens Sunday after spotting a vehicle taken in a carjacking. MPD said officers saw Gabrielle Carey, 18, getting in and out of a 2017 Nissan Maxima that was stolen during a carjacking in the 5100 block of Daysland Cove in Southeast Shelby County. Police did not say when the carjacking happened. According to the affidavit, officers followed Carey into the store where she met a co-defendant who attempted to swallow a car key.

ASP seizes 300 lbs of illegal drugs, arrests two from Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Arkansas State Police say troopers seized over 300 pounds of illegal drugs and arrested two people from Memphis during two separate traffic stops within hours last week. ASP said on June 19, just before 2 a.m., troopers stopped a 2025 Toyota Camry for a traffic violation on Interstate 30 eastbound near the 65-mile marker in Clark County. During a search of the car, troopers said they discovered 13 boxes containing over 150 bottles of illegal Promethazine.

Cordova IKEA expanding fulfillment site, won’t comment on layoffs

Byhalia alderman, former mayor, mayor's sister arrested in burglary case

BYHALIA, Miss. — A Byhalia alderman and the former mayor of the Mississippi town were arrested Tuesday after being indicted by a grand jury in connection with a burglary last October. Former Byhalia Mayor Deborah Tuttle Weathers and Weather’s sister, Lori Wilson, were both charged with burglary of a building and conspiracy to commit the crime of commercial burglary. Alderwoman Delainer Richmond was charged with receiving stolen property over $25,000.
