LAKEWOOD, Ohio (WJW) – This week marks the start of a major push by a local group aimed at eliminating property taxes. Their goal is to collect enough signatures to get their petition on the November ballot. Beth Blackmarr, of Lakewood, said her home’s assessed value went up over 50% when she got her property tax re-evaluation last year. “I opened it up and nearly fainted. It went from $188,000 to $299,000. And I said, ‘that’s it,'” Blackmarr said.

ELYRIA, Ohio (WJW) — Humane officers call it one of the most brutal cases of animal abuse. A local dog survived a brutal stabbing by its owner. According to Greg Willey, executive director of the Friendship Animal Protective League, the shelter got a call Saturday about a dog that was brought into the Northview Animal Clinic in North Ridgeville. “I honestly could not believe this dog was still alive. It is one of the most graphic cases where an animal survived an attack,” Willey said.

FREMONT, Ohio (WJW) – It started as a normal walk on a bike trail Sunday night for 15-year-old Tyson Kieffer of Fremont, Ohio. “We just got to the end right by the bridge, and that’s when we saw the families yelling to the ones still on the bridge,” said Kieffer. Kieffer said a family of four was walking on a bridge off Hayes Avenue in Fremont. The bridge is used only for trains. (WJW photo)That’s when he saw a train coming onto the span.
