Spurs fans could have been chanting for the Aztecs the past 50-plus years. The name was among the entries in a "Name That Team" contest to pick a new moniker for the recently relocated ABA franchise formerly known as the Dallas Chapparals. On May 20, 1973, Spurs was chosen as the name from over 5,000 entries in a contest in the San Antonio Light newspaper. The second most popular name was the Aztecs, according to records kept by the San Antonio Public Library's Texana/Genealogy Department.
