AUSTIN — An Austin family service and support center is looking for help in repairing its basement and roof, which were damaged in severe flooding nearly two years ago. A House In Austin is a parent-child resource hub at 533 N. Pine Ave. that offers social, educational and holistic support for West Side families. The group is leading a campaign, called Raise The Roof, to raise $45,000 for roofing repairs, electrical upgrades, fence repairs and to fix damages from the summer 2023 flooding.

AUSTIN — An upcoming event at Legler Regional Library will highlight the lesser-known and undocumented history of West Side writers and literature. Our Westside Story: Preserving Our History, a monthly listening series presented by Legler Regional Library artist-in-residence Kenn Cook Jr., will focus on the West Side Writers Guild at this month’s event. It will begin 2 p.m. May 24 in the library’s community room at 115 S. Pulaski Road.

AUSTIN — An arts-focused nonprofit has opened a permanent home in a historical and previously vacant Austin building. Alt Space Chicago held a grand opening ceremony last weekend at its new headquarters in the former Austin Bank building, 5654 W. Corcoran Place. The 30,000-square-foot space will host five nonprofit community organizations, have 10 artists-in-residence and offer community programs.

NILES — Hundreds of firefighters, first responders and city leaders gathered Tuesday to say goodbye to Capt. David Meyer, a veteran firefighter who was remembered for his courage, leadership and ability to bring levity to his and his colleagues’ dangerous profession. The funeral for Meyer, 54, was held Tuesday at St. John Brebeuf Catholic Church in Niles.
