NORTH LAWNDALE — A longtime elementary school nurse in North Lawndale was honored this week with an international nursing award not typically given to those working outside of hospitals. Cassandra Walton — a nurse at Roswell B. Mason Elementary School, 217 W. 18th St., for 27 years — on Monday received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, which celebrates nurses nominated by their patients, families and co-workers.

NORTH LAWNDALE — A new exhibit in a North Lawndale pop-up museum invites West Side families to explore the role of trees in the area and across the city ahead of Earth Day. “ReCovered: Chicago’s Urban Tree Canopy” is on display at the Lawndale Pop-Up Spot, 3601 W. Douglas Blvd., through April 26. It is the first exhibit of the year for the Pop-Up Spot, a seasonal mini-museum that displays exhibits on and inside metal shipping containers.

NORTH LAWNDALE — Riot Fest is staying in Douglass Park for at least another three years after agreeing to increase its funding contributions to the West Side park. Festival organizers announced Wednesday a deal with the Chicago Park District to host its event at Douglass Park through 2027 with the option to extend the deal through 2029. The deal also triples festival payouts to Douglass Park, 1401 S. Sacramento Drive, for use of the park.

AUSTIN — More affordable housing is coming to Austin, with a national nonprofit starting work on the first of many homes it hopes to build on the West Side. Habitat for Humanity Chicago broke ground Monday on seven homes in Austin: three in the 400 block of North Lockwood Avenue and four at 5320 W.

AUSTIN — A team of women carpenters, plumbers and developers is leading the renovation of a women’s recovery home coming to Austin this summer. Pink Hats Construction & Development Group, Inc. is renovating a 16,000-square-foot recovery facility at 851 N. Leamington Ave. The 30-room building, expected to be complete in July, will be home to women’s services for Phoenix Recovery Support Services, an Austin-based substance abuse treatment facility.
