Early morning texts and calls rarely herald good news. That was true last Monday, when phones started to chirrup all over Cork and beyond before 9am with a terrible message — the sudden passing of John Mullins at the age of just 57. It is still hard to believe that such a larger-than-life character, full of wit and mischief, is no longer with us.

No more complaints and misgivings. The revamped Champions Cup format, with its imbalanced pool stages and Round of 16, leaves a lot to be desired but there is simply no gainsaying the drama of a quarter-final stage. You might quibble about the various seedings that sends Munster to Bordeaux despite a quite splendid victory in La Rochelle or Leinster’s seemingly perennial knockout base in Dublin but all of these matches have jeopardy at their core.

I see the big pot of paint has been taken out of the shed in City Hall. My evidence? The intersection at the Michael Collins Bridge and Penrose Quay was recently repainted, bright white lines delineating traffic routes and a sparkling new yellow box laid down to warn drivers. Today's Irish Examiner city column: maintenance is necessary in every city for safety, pride, and a host of other reasons. Why is it so hard to do in Cork, then? #cork #citylife https://t.co/JV2zTmcYsd
