    A town centre road will be shut for two days in Thatcham. The Broadway will be closed northbound, between Church Gate and the Bath Road/Chapel Street, from 7pm to 5am on Wednesday, April 23, and Thursday, April 24. The closure is to allow Volker Highways to complete block paving works and repair two gullies on behalf of West Berkshire Council. The contractor said residential and blue light access will be maintained if possible.

    A repair café recently enjoyed a blast from the past when a local couple brought in a vintage reel-to-reel tape recorder. The reel-to-reel recorder, brought into Newbury and Thatcham Repair Café by Val and Alan, was used to record their wedding in North London in 1972 so they could relive their special moment on each anniversary. But about seven years ago, the tape recorder stopped working. The couple approached local businesses, who said it was unlikely to be repairable.

    Thatcham Town Council is welcoming back the France at Home Market for a full day of continental charm. Residents and visitors are invited to browse a mouth-watering selection of freshly baked baguettes and croissants, artisan cheeses, saucissons and other délices prepared by visiting French traders. Warm up with sizzling crêpes, hearty galettes and a variety of hot dishes. The event is taking place on Saturday, April 12, from 9am to 5pm at The Broadway.

    A full house gathered in Kingsclere on Friday (April 4) to hear an enlightening talk by Lieutenant General James Bashall. More than 100 people, some as far afield as Northampton, enjoyed a presentation by former president of the Royal British Legion Lieutenant General James Bashall at The Fieldgate Centre. The proceeds from the talk raised £1,000 for the RBL.

    Visitors to Greenham Control Tower (GCT) marked 25 years yesterday (Tuesday) since the common returned to public use after decades of military occupation. The celebrations involved a variety of stalls, guided nature walks, wildlife spotting, pond dipping and children’s activities around the control tower – as well as the unveiling of its new Common Stories Room. The digitally-focused space, located on the ground floor, is intended to give visitors an idea of what to expect on the floor above.
