Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ “Purpose,” a family drama that received its world premiere at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre in 2024, has won the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, it was announced Monday. The play, which was commissioned by Steppenwolf, bowed in Chicago in March 2024. It transferred to Broadway earlier this year where it is currently running and where it recently received six Tony Award nominations including best play.

Well, it’s not a new festival, per se, according to Pitchfork Music Festival co-founder Mike Reed, who on Wednesday announced the inaugural Sound & Gravity — a multivenue-based concert “community experience” — running Sept. 10-14 in Bricktown/Avondale.

The blues will be celebrated in a big way this summer if the 2025 Chicago Blues Festival lineup announced Wednesday morning by the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, is any indication. The largest free blues festival in the world, which runs June 5-8, features three days of performances across four stages in Millennium Park, a Maxwell Street Blues Series, and a full day of programming at the Ramova Theatre.

Legendary singer Johnny Mathis is retiring from the road and live performances as he approaches his 90th birthday. The singer’s Facebook page announced on Wednesday that due to his age and “memory issues which have accelerated,” the singer is canceling all tour dates beyond his May 18 concert in Englewood, New Jersey. Born in Texas, Mathis’ career spans nearly 70 years, and boasts more than 73 Billboard-charting albums.
